UF Preview Prices Broke State Law. How are They Fixing it?

Preview is a required event for all new students at the University of Florida. In general, families have spent at least $125 to attend. The state maximum is $35. Many families are upset with the university’s outrageous prices and it is unclear if UF will provide refunds.

Problem: UF is overcharging families to attend a required event for new students

The families have the financial aspect of this problem. UF has the legal aspect of this problem for breaking the law.

UF Student Reported Rape in Jennings Hall, UPD Says

A UF student reported a rape that occurred around a month ago. The student did not release the attacker’s name and did not want to discuss many details with the police department due to the student having previous relations with the attacker.

Problem: It is hard for victims to report sexual assaults and rapes to the police. This is especially true when the attacker and victim know one another. 1 in 6 people are raped and/or assaulted, only 10% are reported, and even less are charged with their crimes.

More than 630,000 Pounds of Trash Collected in Alachua County

Over the years, Keep Alachua Beautiful has collected over 630,000 pounds of liter, mainly storm liter. Two thirds of that garbage was able to be recycled.

Problem: There is a large amount of trash, particularly after storms, along the roads in Alachua County.

‘We’ve Had Enough.’: Students Organize Protest on Fraternity Drive

All throughout campus there are blue emergency phones to allow students to feel safer, especially when walking alone at night. However, the only area the emergency phones are not located on is Fraternity Drive. UF students are partnering with the National Women’s Liberation to protest the lack of phones. At the end of Spring, the UF student government failed to pass a proposal to add the lights in the area.

Problem: A lack of blue emergency phones makes students feel unsafe in this area, especially at night.

Reallocation of Funds Force Change for UF’s Largest Student Organizations

After the Young Americans for Freedom sued UF, it affected funding for many other organizations on campus. Now, the student government is struggling to find ways to properly fund these organizations such as the Asian American Student Association. Now only 59 out of 400 organizations are receiving funding.

Problem: There is a lack of funding for student organizations.

UF organizations currently not receiving funding they should be.

  1. Meg,
Your post about student safety on campus was a very important issue that needs to be solved. The idea of having the blue lights around campus to better protect our students and faculty is very good, however, we need to make sure it is in all the areas that students are susceptible to danger. Fraternity row, especially late at night, can feel unsafe to students who are walking home alone and if anything were to happen, they need to have a source of protection and safety. There is very easy opportunity in this that can be taken advantage of and the school and student government need to get on it soon before something happens to a student in that area and they are held responsible now that the issue has been brought up. Great article to talk about and awesome post!

  2. Hey Meg,

Since all but your last article are either already included in my post or on the post of the other student I commented on, I'll just react to the last one. The last article about the funds of UF's student organizations being scarce is quite eminent. Especially as a veteran and an active member of the Collegiate Veteran's Society for the university, I am definitely aware of how little funds we have and hope that this can be sorted out sooner rather than later. Nonetheless, it is refreshing to see all of the organizations supporting each other through this financial situation.
